You may have some of the best twin-wall polycarbonate (PC) sheets at your disposal, however; if you don’t follow the recommended installation procedure, you can end up destroying the PC sheets.

There are a number of factors that you need to consider during a twin-wall polycarbonate installation process and they include:

Cutting or bending

since PC sheets are flexible, they can be bent. Every multi-wall polycarbonate sheet has a predefined radius through which it can be bent. Beyond this radius, the sheet can buckle which will lead to deterioration of mechanical properties. Remember to refer to the data sheet. You can always refer to the twin-wall cutting procedure.

How do you position the sheet?

You should install the twin-wall polycarbonate sheets with their flutes positioned vertically. For situations where they are used as roofs; the slope should be between 5° and 10°. You need to seal the top and the bottom of these sheets to protect the sheet from insects and dirt which may enter the channels. You must use only the recommended sealants.

Cutting the multi-wall polycarbonates

generally, you should use a sharp tool with a fine tooth since this will reduce the vibration and chatter. The most recommended types of saws include the circular and the saber saw. Remember to clamp the sheets during the cutting process. When it comes to drilling, which can also be classified as a cutting process during a multi-wall polycarbonate installation process; you should use a carbide tipped twist drill. Remember to drill holes which are slightly larger than the fasteners to allow for the expansion and contraction.

Thermal expansion

polycarbonates have a relatively high co-efficient of expansion thus; during the installation process, you must allow for a room for thermal expansion. You should take note of this difference in both the width and the length. The glazing system should not inhibit the process of expansion in any direction.

Fastening

the screws which are used to fasten the multi-wall polycarbonate should have either EPDM or neoprene and the washers must not crush the polycarbonate panel. One washer should be placed between the structure and the polycarbonate sheet while the other between the tip of the fastener and the multi-wall polycarbonate sheet. Other items such as the aluminum glazing systems can be used to join the adjoining panels. They are available in a wide range of profiles such as the “H-shape” and end caps. Most of them are non-structural and they depend on the frame structure.

During the twin-wall polycarbonate installation process, you need to note the side which has been coated with the UV-protection layer. It must face the exterior since it is designed to protect the polycarbonate sheet from degrading. However, there are those PC sheets which have been coated on both sides for maximum protection.

In case you can’t manage the do-it-yourself (DIY), you can hire a professional to avoid any chances of destroying either the coating or the polycarbonate sheet. Again, you should have all the necessary safety gadgets such as gloves, overall and goggles.
