May be, you are planning to construct an in ground swimming pool on your property. The truth of the matter is, owning a swimming pool involves a lot of stages and processes. Just be sure to read this guide before you begin the process.
Basically, the entire process involves the following critical stages:
- Designing and planning
- Get a construction permit
- Marking out and excavating the area
- Install pool walls or panels
- Install plumbing and electrical systems
- Pour concrete floor and build walls
- Do necessary finishing
- Fill the swimming pool
- Install a swimming pool enclosure
With these 10 processes, you should be able to construct an in ground swimming pool of your choice.
NOTE: In case you don’t have experience or training, then hire a qualified swimming construction company. You may not have the required expertise and equipment needed for the project.
So, let’s start the process:
Design & planning for the in ground swimming pool
Without a swimming pool design and plan, then everything you are trying to do will only be a waste of time and resources.
First, you need to figure out the type of in ground swimming pool you want to construct. Is it a rectangular, square, circular or an irregular shaped swimming pool?
As long as you know exactly what you want realize by the end of the process, the designing and planning process should be an issue.
You can search on the internet to get swimming pool design ideas. The Houzz website is one of the best place to get swimming pool ideas. In short, you should achieve the following at this stage:
- A definite shape of in ground swimming pool
- Specify various specifications such as total surface areas and volume.
- Color of the pool
NOTE: Complex swimming pool designs are more expensive to construct.
Secondly, you need to have a definite plan on how you intend to go about the in ground swimming pool construction process. It is not just a matter of scribbling figures on a piece of paper. You MUST stick to this plan.
It is at this stage that you need to evaluate the feasibility the entire project. Find out why you have to construct an in ground swimming pool and opposed to above ground pools.
Basically, your plan should capture the following key elements:
- Time – how long do you expect the project to last?
- List of basic components and prices
- Equipment and accessories required
- Exact location to construct the swimming pool.
- Source of labor
- Well thought-out swimming pool construction budget
I highly recommended that you work closely with an expert in the swimming pool construction. He/she will give more insights on what you should do. It is even important when it comes to budgeting.
With all these in place, you can move to the next swimming pool construction step:
Get a construction or building permit
Don’t begin the swimming pool construction without a construction/building permit.
When you hire a qualified swimming pool building contractor, you don’t have to worry about this. He/she will get one before the construction process begins.
Normally, you will be issued with a swimming pool construction permit by your local authorities. Of course, this aims to ensure the entire swimming pool construction process is safe and does not endanger the lives of people in your neighborhood.
It also aims to ensure the construction process conforms to the stipulated environmental requirements. Obviously, the officer concerned will visit the site for assessment. You will be issued with a building permit based on the outcome of these assessments.
At this point, you are now free to begin the construction process. This leads us to step three of our in ground swimming pool construction guide.
Mark out and excavating the area
Swimming pool safety is an important aspect during the in ground swimming pool construction process. First, you need to install a temporary barrier and indicate there is work in progress. This is an important swimming pool construction regulation.
Secondly, clear everything that exists in the area where you had planned to install your new in ground swimming pool.
Using the specifications for your swimming pool (refer to swimming pool plan), mark out the area. It should reflect your swimming pool design thou, with some extra allowance.
Thirdly, begin the excavation process. You should have the necessary construction equipment. Ensure you dig out the area, leaving some allowances.
Of course, the process may result in some irregular shapes. With these allowances, you can modify the space to suit your pool design.
Excavating is a critical process and it is one of the reasons why the site assessment is necessary before the construction process begins. There are a number of factors you need to note at this point:
- Ensure you don’t run into any utility lines. That is, if the site is close to any utility lines such as water, electricity or gas.
- Assess the structure of the area you intend to install the pool. Examining the structure will help you determine whether the area needs more reinforcement or not.
As a matter of fact, you will not return all the soil/sand to the hole. Discard all the sand and soil in one place. This will make the disposal process easier at the end of the project.
Build swimming pool walls, floor or panels
Here, the process may vary slightly depending on the type of in-ground swimming pool you had planned to construct. You may decide to construct an in ground pool with concrete or already designed kits. I will discuss the two process before we discuss the finishing operations involved.
The excavation process leaves a rugged and inconsistent shape. In fact, it could also make the soil within the hole to be weak. For this reason, you need to start by grading the floor surface.
Basically, grading will result in an even surface. This will make the construction process easy and simple. Remember, you should do the grading process based on the orientation of the swimming pool floor.
With this, you can begin to install the swimming pool wall and floor panels.
Installing swimming pool walls and floor – concrete in ground pool
When it comes to dealing with concrete, the process may seem cumbersome. I will make it simple for you to understand.
Here, the process may involve 4 different pool construction stages. These will include the following:
1. Installing the pool frames
Assuming you have done the above procedures successfully, it is now time to make your dreams a reality. Having that swimming pool of your dreams, right? Here we go:
Begin to install the frames of the swimming pool. You can use wood and metal bars. During the installation process, ensure they are all in line with each other.
2. Incorporate pool plumbing system
The swimming pool plumbing system is an essential component. Thus, you need an experienced and qualified person to do the job. Remember, the plumbing systems should meet the approved swimming pool codes.
It is through these systems that you will fill or empty the swimming pool. Normally, the installation process is such that they are fully covered in the concrete wall. The pool frame I discussed above is a simply a structure that will support the concrete before it dries up.
3. Install swimming pool electrical systems
Well, an in ground pool is not complete with electrical systems. Also, water is an electrolyte so, you need a skilled electrician for proper installation. Remember, no swimming pool user should suffer from electric shock. So, the technician should have all the safety measures in place. You may need to install swimming pool lights, run pumps or go about pool filtration.
4. Start building the actual pool walls and floor
It is now time to start building the actual floor and walls of the swimming pool. Mix sand and cement to the right proportion and begin to pour on the floor. At every stage, you need to grade and smooth once poured.
You should pay close attention to the orientation of your swimming pool floor. This is important when you plan to design a swimming pool with varying depth.
Once you are done with the floor, it is now time to build the swimming pool walls. You can use concrete of cinder blocks. Do it until it reaches a level ground.
Ensure the swimming pool wall is fully reinforced to avoid chances of collapsing. An experienced and skilled swimming pool contractor will be handy here.
Alternatively, you may use in ground pool kits to construct the swimming pool. The process is simple. I will explain it shortly.
NOTE: Allow concrete to cure properly before proceeding to the next step. It should take about 4 weeks for it to cure. So, be patient.
To make the concrete swimming pool moisture barrier, you may opt for either of the following types of coating – plastic liner, real tile covering, plaster coating or sprayed plastic coating.
Installing swimming pool walls and floor – in ground pool kits
This is yet, another option that is common among many contractors. Here is what you need to do:
First, you should start putting up the wall panels. Normally, steel is a perfect choice for in ground swimming pools. You need to put all the swimming pool together. Like in the case of the concrete swimming pool, ensure all the walls are at the same height.
It is actually the main reason why I insist on grading the surface before you begin the installation process.
Secondly, install all the necessary plumbing systems and electrical systems. Also, depending on the swimming pool design, you may install all the swimming pool accessories at this stage.
Thirdly, you will require cement to put the swimming pool kits intact. That is, you will pour cement on each brace immediately after setting up the wall.
This cement will help to keep the swimming pools in place while supporting against pressure from the water.
After the three steps, you should have a full in ground swimming pool structure without the floor. So, it will be time to install the swimming pool floor.
Add sand and make sure it conforms to the desired shape of the swimming pool. With the floor, fully installed, you may install foam padding.
Lastly, fill the remaining space with soil or sand. You should leave an allowance for installing the swimming pool deck.
Fill the in ground swimming pool with water
At this point, you should have a complete in ground pool. All remains is the finishing operations and you will be ready to use the pool.
Fill the swimming pool with water. This is to test whether there are any leakages. Also, you should use this time to test the plumbing systems.
Install a swimming pool deck
You need to install the swimming pool deck. There are so many options available.
Again, safety is an important factor to consider. It should not be one that swimming pool users can easily slide and fall. Your swimming construction technicians should help you choose the best swimming pool deck idea. That is, one that is cost effective, durable, guarantees safety and attractiveness.
Protect the your pool with a polycarbonate enclosure
Apparently, it is a rule that every swimming pool must have an enclosure. You can check with your local swimming pool laws. This is basically to prevent the number of accidents witnessed in the recent past.
Swimming pool enclosures not only guarantee safety, but also extend the swimming season. Whether it is summer or winter, your pool will always be protected from devastating weather conditions. They are also available in many designs and configurations. You can go for the fixed or retractable swimming pool enclosures, high or low profile, it will all depend on your choices and preference.
The good thing is, once you install a polycarbonate swimming pool enclosure, it will last for more than 25 years. So, you don’t have to worry about this again.
With an in ground swimming pool ready for use, it will take a maximum of 3 days to install an enclosure. Here is a complete guide to swimming pool enclosure installation process.
There are quite a number of landscaping ideas you can use to transform the environment around your swimming pool. Have a look at this:
By adding plants, nicely arranged and painted stones, you can add life to your swimming pool. Just ensure it blends well with the external environment.
As you can see, installing an in ground swimming pool involves: designing, planning, actual installation and finishing operations. When you observe all the five steps I have mentioned above, I am quite certain you will have the best outdoor experience.
